Gia Lac Festival

We can understand “Gia Lac” in 2 ways: “more fun” and “happy houses”. The market was established from the reign of Minh Mang (1820-1840) by Dinh Vien Cong Nguyen Phuoc Binh. Initiatively, Gia Lac market was the place where relatives exchange goods. After that, people around the area came here to purchase and created folk games. Therefore, Gia Lac market became a form of spring fair – a popularized fair during Tet holiday. It is located at the intersection, bordering Nam Pho village, far about 3 kilometers from Hue city to Vi Da village. The market is far about 300 meters from Huong River.

Gia Lac market has a plenty of goods, it is changed over the years: from appliance of children, food… It is a form of “outdoor market” today. The toys are folk toys for children such as: birds, fish, fruit which are made from tapioca with many colors. The bigger toys are made from clay such as: pig to save money, rooster, sold in market. Dishes make of all kinds of meat: roasted pig, beef, shrimp, fish… Especially, roasted beef become an indispensable dish on Tet holiday in Gia Lac market, that tradition still lasts to these days.

The market also holds many games during 3 days on New Year: bai choi, bai ghe, ho gia gao, bai thai… People come to market with traditional costumes. Both sellers and buyers behave politely without noisy. After 3 days on Lunar New Year, all “outdoor markets” return to normal activities. This place expresses the Hue culture sharply from costumes to language.

Gia Lac has a local character. One special goods is sold over market are: “cau” Nam Pho and “trau” Dinh market. The founder wanted to create a place to exchange in the folklore. The games in Gia Lac market are traditional games. Thanks to the support of people, Gia Lac market has passed almost two hundreds years and existed until now.
